About the event

The Brinton 1704 House is pleased to announce the dedication ceremony of its new Brandywine

Battlefield marker on Saturday, October 29, 2022 at 1:00 pm in conjunction with the Pennsylvania

Society of Sons of the Revolution and its Color Guard. This event will be held at the William Brinton 1704

House, 21 Oakland Road, West Chester, PA, 19382 and is free and open to the public.

On Sept. 11, 1777 close to the Brinton 1704 House in Chadds Ford Township, Delaware County,

American soldiers under the leadership of General Greene inflicted heavy casualties on the pursuing

Crown Forces as the Continental Army was retreating. Nearby, the Polish officer Casimir Pulaski led an

American cavalry charge against the Crown Forces applying a final defense towards the end of the day-

long Battle of the Brandywine.

These heroic actions are now commemorated by a new Brandywine Battlefield marker, one of 15 such

markers being provided by the Pennsylvania Society of Sons of the Revolution and its Color Guard to

help today’s Americans understand and appreciate the sacrifices of their forebears in this important

conflict 245 years ago.

The markers, taken together, stand as guideposts for a driving tour of the battlefield. This dedication of

the Battle of Brandywine’s Final Defense marker at 21 Oakland Road, West Chester, PA is the eighth of

15 proposed markers highlighting the significant action during the Battle of the Brandywine. The

location of the marker, the Brinton 1704 House, is one of the oldest Quaker homes in the United States, a National Historic Landmark, and one of the original 14 homes still standing on the Brandywine

Battlefield. This marker’s placement was guided by the Brandywine Battlefield Task Force Steering

Committee which is following the interpretive plan developed by the American Battlefield Protection

program.
